A police spokesperson said a road train driver heard a loud bang as he was travelling along the Castlereagh Highway just after 10pm Saturday.
The driver turned off the highway and onto Cumberdoon Way towards Carinda in order to stop and inspect what may have caused the noise.
When he got out of the vehicle he noticed flames coming from under a wheel arch on the second trailer.
The driver managed to unhook the truck and first trailer and drive them away from the trailer that had caught alight.
"The driver attempted to douse the flames with water but the fire overtook and ignited the entire trailer," a police spokesperson said.
"The trailer was carrying a phosphate sand (garden mix) and was not hazardous."
Emergency crews attended the scene shortly afterwards, and firefighters put out the blaze.
"Walgett Shire Council put in diversions until a crane and tow truck could be arranged to clear the trailer from the road surface," the police spokesperson said.
