Dubbo's premier tourist attraction rose to the top of the field to land the Unique Accommodation honour, once again flying the name of the city on the national stage.
It was a case of persistence pays off, with the zoo taking out third place in the same category 12 months ago.
Zoo director Matthew Fuller said the award recognised the organisation's continued endeavours to develop and operate its unique overnight experiences to a global standard.
That's no mean feat, but in the past three years the zoo has created the Billabong Camp, redeveloped the Zoofari Lodge and opened the Savannah Cabins self-contained accommodation.
Certainly they are unique opportunities to wake up in the wild, and the fact that it's here is to the benefit of the entire city.
For many years Dubbo has been on the map and renowned as the home of the Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
It brings tourists to the city who then spend money in the wider accommodation, retail and hospitality sectors.
And the zoo's significant investment in capital infrastructure has generated construction jobs for the city.
Not to mention the ongoing jobs it provides as an employer with a large staff.
The win at the Australian Tourism Awards is a fantastic outcome and we look forward to the future plans identified by Mr Fuller coming to fruition.
