Ms Conn has blamed remarks made by Mr Grant in relation to the proposed merger of Dubbo and Wellington for her decision to step down.
Her stance became public on Wednesday, the same day Mr Grant farewelled his mother at a memorial service at Fingal Bay.
The following day he said: “Alison Conn has served The Nationals faithfully and while her resignation is regretful, I wish her the very best for the future.”
In a statement Mr Grant also reiterated his support for the “current independent and transparent process that is thoroughly examining what can achieve the best outcomes for the ratepayers of Dubbo and Wellington”.
“I want to stress there is no pre-determined outcome,” he said.
Mr Grant said the “delegate” at Thursday’s sessions of the public inquiry into the proposed merger would be “listening to the community”.
