Industry body Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) said research was expected to be conducted in February.
Surveys in others markets, including Bendigo, Shepparton, Cairns, Toowoomba and Wagga Wagga, would follow soon after.
CRA said the audience measurement research was expected to be of strong interest as some radio markets had not been officially surveyed for more than 10 years.
A survey conducted in Dubbo in 2005 put 2DU at the top of the market, followed by StarFM, ZOO FM and ABC Western Plains.
In 2002 survey results ranked 2DU first with StarFM second, ZOO FM third and ABC Western Plains fourth.
CRA chief executive officer Joan Warner said four certified companies would have access to this year's regional surveys to produce reports for stations and advertisers
Ms Warner said 33 per cent of the Australian population lived in regional areas and locally produced, free-to-air commercial radio remained one of the best ways to reach audiences.
There were more than 200 commercial radio stations broadcasting to regional communities.
Ms Warner said having up-to-date and consistent data on listeners was important to radio stations, businesses and government departments.
