The retired police sergeant who has given his time for many decades to the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) was on Tuesday named the recipient of an Emergency Services Medal in the Australia Day Honours List 2016.

► A local producer is set to gain global recognition after being chosen to supply world-renowned Danish restaurant Noma during its 10-week tenure in Australia.

The two Michelin star restaurant's Sydney pop-up opens on Wednesday, and will feature six products from Mendooran's Black Gate Distillery.

► Wellington Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Captain Mark Moroney’s long and dedicated service in leading emergency response, firefighter training, and fire safety education in the Wellington community has been recognised in today’s Australia Day Honours.

A retained, or on-call, firefighter with FRNSW for 30 years, and Captain of Wellington Fire Station since 1997, Captain Moroney has been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM).

► Residents are being encouraged to celebrate life in our region this Australia Day by joining in the Australia Day celebrations in Narromine on Tuesday January 26.

This year Narromine will welcome Robyn Moore as its 2016 Australia Day Ambassador. 

Robyn's voice has been heard in almost every home in Australia over the past 40-plus years however, no-one will know her name.

1788  -  Today is Australia Day, commemorating the arrival of the First Fleet at Port Jackson, New South Wales.

MAX Atkins of Yatte Yattah is no stranger to the country shows, winning countless champion prizes over the years but this year it looked like he wouldn’t be exhibiting.

The day after the South Coast Register spoke to Mr Atkins at the Berry Show in 2015 about his winning roses, he collapsed.

“I was collecting my vases and the next thing I knew I was surrounded by medics. They thought I had a heart attack,” he said.

He was cleared of any heart trauma, but it would be the first of dozens of trips to hospitals over the next year.
