Run by artist Jude Crawford-Watts, eight to 12 year olds used graphite and water colours to recreate the bugs they saw under the microscope.
The children also had the opportunity to study science textbooks and John Wolseley's work for inspiration.
"I'm really encouraging them to do detail," Ms Crawford-Watts said.
As for why the focus was on bugs?
"Looking at them through the microscope is just beautiful," Ms Crawford-Watts said.
Twelve-year-old Xavier Ryan said the coolest thing to look through under the microscope was the hornet's head because of all the details.
Xavier said he didn't do much drawing at home but his brother did so the two boys attended the workshop together. The microscopes were lent to the cultural centre by the School of Rural Health.
