Newtown will head into day two well placed against RSL-Colts and will be confident of knocking off the defending premiers.
The Tigers dismissed Colts for 169 at Lady Cutler 3 with Jackson Dawe's 6-27 the standout performance of the weekend.
A quickfire 38 not out from Craig Pettit late in the afternoon helped Newtown reach 2-61 at stumps.
Colts had earlier got off to a solid start after they won the toss, reaching 47 without loss before Graeme Morton fell for 21.
Dawe then entered the attack and tore through the middle order as the men in red stumbled to 5-87.
Sean Mason (21), Ryan Davies (19) and Nic Crawford (19) ensured the tail wagged somewhat but Dawe knocked over the tail to finish with a 6-27 from 9.3 overs.
Pettit and Chris Beatty got Newtown off to a flier in reply before Jakke Gardiner entered the attack and dismissed Beatty for 21.
Gardiner then trapped Tyler Spang in front to leave the Tigers with another 108 runs required next week with eight wickets in hand.

Three late wickets gave CYMS a boost in their match with Macquarie but the Cougars still have it all to do next week.
The Blues won the toss and bowled at Lady Cutler 2 and it proved the right choice as they reduced CYMS to 4-33 early on.
A half-century from Darryl Thompson and 31 from Darren Kranias steadied the ship but opening bowler James Hughes returned to the attack to rip through the lower order.
Hughes dismissed Thompson for 54 and went on to finish with 4-21 from 12 overs as CYMS were all out for 134.
The Macquarie run chase did not begin well with Richard Hawker (0) going early before Kranias picked up the wickets of Blake Jones (9) and Ian Marchant (6).
Shane Dupille (16 not out) and Brant Mann (0 not out) will resume the run chase next week at 3-40.

The final match of the round is the most evenly placed with Rugby finishing day one at 0-2 in reply to South Dubbo's 225.
James Duffy's 57 led the way for Souths, while Jordan Murphy (35) and Brian McKinnon (30) also chipped in to help the score pass 200.
Mitchell Rosenbaum was the best of the Rugby bowlers with 3-31 from nine overs and Brett Paul (2-28) and Glenn Shepherd (2-22) were also multiple wicket-takers.
The Hornets were dismissed with two overs in the day, leaving Rugby with a tricky task before the close of play.
But Jack Kempston (2) and Lachlan Harper (0) survived the 12 balls and will resume the run chase next week at Lady Cutler 4.
