He suggests Operation Art inspires young people to explore the visual arts in the knowledge that their efforts will support the recovery of children in hospital.
"At the heart of it is young people empathising with other young people who are experiencing health issues in hospital in an attempt to make them feel better," the curator said.
Operation Art is an initiative of The Children's Hospital at Westmead in association with the NSW Department of Education and Communities.
Each year students in kindergarten through to Year 10 submit hundreds of artworks with some ending up on hospital walls after being shown to interested communities.
WPCC hosts Operation Art "every couple of years" with Mr Buchanan enthusiastic about 50 of its artworks currently in his care.
"The variety of media is really wide, from print-making through to painting and collage," he said.
"It's a really strong year and there's a lot of really great work."
The curator is particularly drawn to a couple of the artworks, including a "fabulous" etching of a robot by a nine-year-old boy.
School students through to seniors are expected to visit WPCC to view the exhibition running until January 26.
The official opening of Operation Art at WPCC is set down for 2pm on Saturday.
Its 50 artworks are destined for The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
