Newtown stunned the competition leaders last week at Lady Cutler 2, rolling them for 146 before cruising to 1-106 by stumps.
A win seems imminent but Tigers captain Mat Skinner is taking nothing for granted.
"You can't walk in expecting too much, we just want to get the 40 runs needed and go from there," he said.
"Getting 300 would be good and we're pretty much sitting on our whole batting lineup still so we'll see how we're going."
While dismissing Souths for less than 150 was massive for Newtown, finishing the day just one wicket down in reply was an extra bonus.
Newcomer Greg Kerr made an instant impact, blasting a quickfire 92 while Tom Skinner was a brick wall at the other end and batted 94 balls for seven runs.
"I can't complain, I wouldn't have thought we'd finish the day with Souths bowled out and us 1-100 in reply," Skinner said.
"I hadn't seen any of Greg so I was curious to see what he could do and he was happy to open and Tom is always keen to bat.
"I said to him runs don't matter it's just about few wickets and now the pitch is a bit more dry and flatter we fancy our chances."
Skinner was particularly delighted with Kerr's form in just his second match for the Tigers as an out-of-town player.
Making Souths' slim chances even more difficult on Saturday is the fact three of their standout players are missing.
Captain Tim Berry, fellow new ball bowler Will Lindsay and also Mitch Bower are all in Wagga with Western Zone.
With three strike weapons out the pressure is piled on to the likes of youngster Henry Railz, Scott Tucker and Matt Finlay.
Newtown remain at full strength and after a disappointing loss to Macquarie last round a win is exactly what the Tigers need.
"Especially after that loss, I was backing us to beat Macquarie but this win would really boost the confidence," Skinner said.
Tom Skinner resumes on 7 not out today while Troy Tracey is yet to score at the other end.
The action resumes at 1pm.
