THE annual Central and Western Racing Associations Charity Day will be held at Dubbo on Saturday.
The event had been scheduled for Dubbo City Bowling Club earlier in the year but was washed out, and with this weekend one of the only weekends in the region with no racing, participants will gather to raise funds for a great cause.
The idea grew from a charity match held to raise funds for the family of former steward James Perry, who lost his life in the 2011 Queensland floods, and has grown from there.
A fund has been put together to help industry participants from the area who fall on hard times, and this year money raised will go to the young family of former jockey Stuart Brown, who passed away during the week at just 43 years of age.
"Stuart was highly respected in the racing industry and his passing is a big loss," Racing NSW chief executive officer Peter V'Landys said.
"He travelled all around New South Wales to ply his trade and was quite successful on the picnic circuit. To lose Stuart at such a young age is heart-breaking and we extend our condolences to Stuart's family and his many friends."
Some excellent auction items will go under the hammer on Saturday, including a 'Behind the Scenes Raceday' donated by Racing NSW that includes a five-course lunch for two in the VIP Directors Room at Royal Randwick in the new five-star facility opposite the winning post on a non-carnival day, and an overnight accommodation for two at the five-star Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney's central business district in a Premier Room with buffet breakfast for two in the hotel restaurant and overnight parking.
Trainers Rodney Robb, Clint Lundholm and Brett Thompson have also donated a one-month training package per trainer.
The bowls afternoon will be held at the Dubbo City Bowling Club from 12pm on Saturday.
