It was a sobering message about diabetes but one that has changed his life for the better.
He regularly gets checked for diabetes and makes sure his daughters do too.
He even shares the message with his fellow employees at the Wellington Correctional Centre for national Walk to Work Day.
Given the Correctional Centre's distance from town, a walk to work was out of the question, so instead a healthy lunch was on the menu to raise money for Diabetes Australia.
It is the second year they have got behind the cause, wearing shirts with the slogan "it took humans a million years to learn how to walk and just one generation to forget".
"Our awareness campaign was a healthy breakfast last year but this time it was the middle of the working day," Mr Thomas said.
"We have got more of a response this year so maybe there is more awareness about eating healthy and diet."
Healthy produce from around the region was sourced and Mr Thomas said with a gym at the correctional centre, healthy living was something they tried to embrace as a team.
"We're focusing on healthy lifestyle, exercise and diet because all three have links to diabetes," he said.
