Colwell's effort came late in the match with the points already assured for the Hornets but it was the perfect way for his side to finish a near complete performance.
Batting first on Saturday, Souths posted an emphatic 6-278 with Mark O'Donnell (79) and Justin Knudsen (62) cashing on John McGrath 1 during a rare second grade match on synthetic.
Jordan Murphy also chipped in with 47 not out while Jerose Joseph took 3-30 with the ball late on for CYMS.
Things started well for the Hornets on day two with CYMS slumping to 2-2 inside the first three overs and things didn't get much better from there.
No Cougar even reached 20 with Colwell's hat-trick, coming in his first over of the day, helped skittle the tail and keep CYMS under 100.
Souths then opted to send the Cougars back in and CYMS finished at 2-38 in a match which ensured Souths went to the top of the ladder.

Macquarie were also big winners in round three of the Pinnington Cup, cruising to a convincing first innings win over Newtown.
Joe Haylock starred with 85 for the Blues while Tyler Cleary made 46 in his side's total of 242.
Newtown then went out with one nervous over to survive before stumps and they suffered a blow when Bailey Edmunds was dismissed on the second last ball of the day.
Resuming on Sunday at 1-1, Newtown needed to dig deep but things went from bad to worse when the Tigers found themselves at 3-9.
The middle order showed some fight but it was nowhere near enough as they were dismissed for 117 with Waseem Khan (3-21), Sandeep Poonia (2-12) and Ben Calder (2-25) the best with the ball.
With first innings points in the bag and a lead of 125 runs, Macquarie opted to send Newtown back in for the remaining 22 overs of the day.
They picked up two wickets but the Tigers survived and finished the match at 2-60.

Rugby kept hold of their spot in the top three with a low-scoring and hard-fought win over RSL-Colts.
Played at Lady Cutler 3, Colts won the toss and opted to bat but could only muster 107.
Garry Goodman's 3-18 from 10 overs was a standout effort for Rugby while the only player to pass 20 for Colts was Ryan Davies (21).
Rugby survived the final 10 overs of the day and resumed at 0-16 on Sunday.
After some early wickets Craig Wood played the anchor role in the middle order but it was still a nervy chase with wickets continuing to fall.
Wood was there when his side passed Colts for the loss of eight wickets and he went to make 52 before his side was bowled out for 134.
