Pocock said the Wallabies' World Cup campaign was the best experience of his international career, even though the 34-17 loss to New Zealand in the final wasn't the result he hoped for.

The 27-year-old said that enjoyment was, in part, due to what former ACT Brumbies centre Matt Giteau and winger Drew Mitchell brought to the squad.

Both Giteau and Mitchell thought their international careers were over when they accepted lucrative contracts in France and left Super Rugby, but the ARU changed their selection policy earlier this year.

It meant overseas players were eligible for Wallabies selection – provided they had played 60 Tests and held an Australian Rugby contract for at least seven years.

Dubbed the "Giteau clause" it allowed the Toulon No.12 to play his 100th Test for the Wallabies, after a four-year hiatus from the international stage.

The clause will also allow Will Genia, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Sekope Kepu to continue representing Australia, despite leaving Super Rugby to play in France.

Both Giteau and Mitchell proved instrumental in the Wallabies' path to the World Cup final.

Given the success of the Giteau clause, the ARU could consider easing the restrictions to allow more overseas-based players to come into the mix.

But Pocock felt the ARU might have it right with their current criteria.

"The two Frenchies added a different flavour and added a lot to the group and it was great having Matt and Drew there for the campaign," he said.

"That's up to the decision-makers and the ARU, but from a player's perspective having two senior players like that, who have clearly shown they've still got what it takes at international level, and obviously not playing for a few years have a real hunger, and I think they add a lot to the group.

"I don't know maybe they've got it right at the moment, but we'll wait and see, that's up to [chief executive] Bill Pulver and the ARU."

Wallabies backs coach Stephen Larkham said locks Dean Mumm and Kane Douglas were also valuable additions to the squad, after the pair returned from overseas in time for coach Michael Cheika to pick them in his World Cup squad.

They not only brought their on-field ability, but valuable intellectual property about their opponents.

"That's up for the ARU to discuss [whether to ease restrictions], but I certainly thought those guys added a lot, particularly coming up against some of the European teams and they've played against them week-in, week-out," Larkham said.

"Dean Mumm, Kane Douglas, Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell all contributed massively to the team.

"I think it was a great initiative to allow those guys to come back into the frame and you could just look at their performances throughout the World Cup and they certainly deserved it."
