White was dropped from the Bushrangers' elimination final of the domestic one-day series in Sydney on Friday, having managed only 137 runs at an average of 27 in six matches to that point.

The Bushrangers needed to find a spot for all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, returning from a one-game suspension, and White was the casualty. But with attention now returning to the four-day format, with the opening round of matches to be day-night games using the pink ball, White is set to return.

He will be particularly keen for a big score, for he was dropped from the Shield side late last season and was overlooked for what proved to be a winning Shield final.

Bushrangers coach David Saker said the former Australian Twenty20 captain was almost certain to return against the Queensland Bulls on Wednesday, particularly with a middle-order spot having opened up since the retirement of David Hussey.

"He [White] is definitely in line. We now go and have a good think about that Shield line-up. He will definitely be in line for that Shield line-up," Saker said.

"We have obviously lost 'Huss', who has retired. There is a spot there, [Chris] 'Bucky' Rogers is not there. There will be openings."

White had been the player of the tournament in last year's domestic one-day series.

Saker, in his first weeks in charge of the side, said the decision to drop White on Friday had been yet another tough decision the Bushrangers had made through the one-day series.

"He has been a fantastic player for Australia over the years and he has been a fantastic servant to Victorian cricket, a very passionate Victorian, so it was a really hard call," Saker said.

"These calls aren't made lightly. We, obviously, did it with Marcus [Stoinis] earlier in the tournament [when he was dropped] and then we had the discipline [issue] with [Glenn] Maxwell. We have had a tough couple of calls at my first go at it."

White has endured a difficult year, having also been unwanted by Big Bash League side Melbourne Stars, the franchise he had captained. He has since linked with the cross-town Renegades.

Saker will hope the Bushrangers can click as a batting unit in the four-day format, having done so only once through the one-day series – against Tasmania.

The bowlers, led by left-arm finger spinner Jon Holland and paceman James Pattinson, generally performed well, while Saker was happy with the effort in the field.

"I think our bowlers were excellent. Our fielding was good. We just didn't fire with the bat at all, other than in one game really. So the bowlers carried us through the tournament. All the batters probably would be saying they should have done better," he said.

Leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed, after a break-out 2014-15 season where he was the leading wicket-taker in the Shield, is another player keen to regain his groove, having had disappointing Test tours of the West Indies and England. But Saker tipped Ahmed would face competition from Holland.

"There are selection issues coming up. There are fast bowlers knocking on the door trying to get into the team. It's going to be hard selection for the first one, both for the spinners and fast bowlers and for the batters. That is a healthy thing to have," Saker said.
