Apprenticed to Rodney Robb, Gallagher achieved the first win of his career when leading all the way on Layne.
Turning back the late challenge of Rosiers ($10.00, Megan Taylor), Layne scored by a half-length with the Barry Molloy-trained Royal Society ($8.00, Catherine Newcombe) a gallant third.
Lumping the 63.5kg top weight, Royal Society was very brave against the much lighter handicapped rivals.
Before a tremendous crowd, racing opened with the Forbes Machinery Centre/Automation Group Maiden Handicap (1200m), with Hoffa Express starting the $2.00 favourite after opening at $2.30.
Hoffa Express (Mathew Cahill) had been placed numerous times and again ran home well from the back of the field but was safely held by the Catherine Chapman-trained In Her Wake ($4.60, Aaron Sweeney), which led from the start.
Octajewel ($4.00, Jacob Gilchrist), the third placegetter, was always handy to the lead and fought on well.
Another win for Dubbo stables came when Parisian Thief ($4.20, Michael Travers) overcame an early three-way battle for the lead to hold on and beat Prior Doubt ($4.00 eq fav, Jake Pracey-Holmes) and Bilesse ($4.00 eq fav, Mathew Cahill) in the Walker's Ag N Vet/BRW Accountants Maiden Plate.
Parisian Thief is trained by Michael Mulholland and was the first leg of a winning double for Travers, who also combined with trainer Peter Stanley to get Destiny Deaxville home in the Uniflex /Don Hodge Trucks Class 1 Handicap (1100m).
Destiny Deaxville ($10.00) shot away on the home turn and won by more than four lengths from Fettlers Boot ($3.20 fav, Mathew Cahill) and Boy Ohboy ($15.00, Catherine Newcombe).
