A police spokesperson said a 21-year-old woman had gone to a licensed club on Brisbane Street on Sunday night and when she left about 1am the following morning she was approached by a man while walking along Carrington Avenue.
He took her by an arm to a nearby car park towards McGee Lane. The woman was able to break free and left the scene.
Police were told as the woman walked south along Brisbane Street, the same man grabbed her and took her to an area behind an old convent, where he sexually assaulted her.
The man left on foot towards Bultje Street.
The woman contacted a friend, who contacted police.
The woman was taken to Dubbo Hospital for treatment.
Officers attached to Orana Local Area Command attended and commenced investigations.
As they continue their inquiries, officers want to speak to a male who may be able to assist them.
He is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, of medium height and build, and with a beard. He was seen wearing a football jersey.
Any witnesses, or anyone with information, has been urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers or Dubbo Police.
