Local hopes in the 2015 Koori Knockout are well and truly alive after the Dubbo Pacemakers scored a bruising and entertaining 24-4 win over the Blacktown Western Warriors at Caltex Park on Saturday morning.
The local side took to the field in just the fifth game of the men's competition and scored a four try to one victory which sees them advance to Sunday's second round.
Brayden Peachey impressed, scoring a try and kicking four conversions while Blacktown suffered a blow in the first half when Billy Stanley was sent from the field following some push and shove.
Dubbo coach Mick Peachey was pleased to get the first match out of the way but with a host of matches to be played tomorrow and the temperatures again expected to be searing he knows tougher tasks lie ahead.
"First game at Knockouts are always hard, it doesn't matter who you play because people are always playing for their communities and their mob so they all put in and it's always hard to get through the first one," he said.
"Then it's just attrition after that and hope you don't have any injuries and you've got to stay focused and like I just said to the boys, don't waste all the effort in the first game, think about the three games you've got to play tomorrow if you're good enough to play in them."
The Pacemakers started the far better of the two sides and were duly rewarded after eight minutes when prop forward Dylan Hill, who was strong all day, barged his way across.
Things got physical from there and after a couple of skirmishes things got a little more heated and Stanley was sent from the field.
It didn't take Dubbo long to capitalise with Peachey scooting through a gap and scoring and his conversion set up a strong lead in the 20 minute half matches.
Blacktown got one back just before the break when winger Nayah Freeman planted the ball down in the corner but the conversion was waved away.
Both sides bombed tries in the second half with Brayden Peachey guilty of knocking on a glorious chance following a sublime David Peachey run and chip but with just six minutes remaining Dubbo put themselves in a commanding position when Matt O'Neill scored and then inside the final minute Michael Peachey put the icing on the cake with another four-pointer.
"The boys have got to save their energy throughout the day, stay in shape, keep getting fluid in to you and that's for everyone, even people who aren't playing footy," coach Peachey said after the win.
"But these are the best and toughest games I've ever played in and you love that stuff and you see some very good footballers, whether they're up and comers or already established and that's the good thing about it."
The Pacemakers will now meet the Worimi Dolphins on Sunday at 9.05am after they cruised past 3 Rivers.
The La Perouse Panthers were one of the most impressive teams in the morning as they brushed aside the Nulla Dolphins 58-0.
