A photo showing a rider and his pillion passenger, wearing nothing but footwear, have been condemned by Tasmania Police, the Tasmanian Motorcycle Council and the Road Safety Advisory Board.
The picture, taken by a third person, was posted onto the Facebook page ‘‘Feel the Freedom’’ and received more than 1000 likes and 820 shares.
The drive behind the photo may have been cheek, but Road Safety Advisory Council chairman Jim Cox said there were serious legal and safety implications tied to the matter.
‘‘Motorcyclists are already over-represented in deaths and serious injuries on the road ... would you not think people would try to preserve their lives?’’ Mr Cox said.
‘‘They are absolute d---heads with a total disregard for safety and the safety of others – they’ve got a death wish.’’
Tasmanian Motorcycle Council president Paul Bullock described the stunt as ‘‘total stupidity’’.
‘‘We all like having some fun, but that is not there,’’ Mr Bullock said.
‘‘There’s no safety whatsoever, no Kevlar trousers, jeans – it’s not there, it’s absolutely ridiculous.’’
Tasmania Police Sergeant Nick Clark said they would like to have a discussion about safety with the riders.
‘‘To ride without the basic safety equipment of a helmet is not only an offence, it is a foolish risk,’’ Sergeant Clark said.
He said anyone who witnessed the stunt, or recognised the riders could report it to Tasmania Police on 131444.
