The Orana Veterans' Saturday race was held on the flat Mogriguy Road course in what can only be described as perfect conditions.
It looked as though limit marker Kathy Furney might get away with the win, but a communication breakdown resulted in the lead car overshooting the turnaround point.
When she arrived at this point there was no one in sight so she took a hit for the team, sacrificing her race to stay at the turnaround until all the competitors had gone through.
John O'Brien and Luke Beange were first to turn for home, quickly followed by the group of Evan Elliott, Mark Weir and Stephen Hoynes, who started two minutes behind, Jeff Sargent and Chris Brook.
Ray Wheeler and Mark McKenna, starting another three minutes back, chased hard and caught the group on the return leg.
With just 600m to go it looked as though Beange and O'Brien would get home for the win, but with the slight uphill at the finish Wheeler and McKenna launched an attack from the seven-man chasing bunch.
The final sprint sent Wheeler first across the finish line, ahead of McKenna and Brook.
Craig May and Darrell Wheeler had the job ahead of them with a two-minute handicap to the next bunch, but fell only a minute behind the rest of the field and recorded the fastest time of 58.01, averaging 37.2km/h.
With only two weeks to go in the competition the point score remains close with Jeff Sargent at the top of the board, only just ahead of Chris Brook, Susan Madden, Ray Wheeler, Craig May and Chris Turtle.
Racing next Saturday will be on the South Geurie course, with a handicap event across the 31-kilometre course.
