Two suicide prevention campaigns, R U OK? day and World Suicide Prevention day, coincide on Thursday, September 10, and Dubbo headspace clinical leader and suicidologist Ann-Marie Hartley said raising awareness is important, because "suicide is everybody's business".
"It's about getting people to feel comfortable talking about it so that if they are ever called upon they know how to help someone, and also if they ever need help they can feel supported," Ms Hartley said.
"Having a community that is confident asking questions creates a kind of safety net."
Removing the stigma was also vital for those who have attempted suicide, as "that can leave a legacy", as well as for people who have lost a loved one to suicide.
The Dubbo National Association for Loss and Grief (NALAG) Suicide Network is organising a 'Walk Towards Hope' on Saturday, September 12, leaving from Bob Jane T-Marts at 11.30am and finishing with a remembering ceremony and BBQ lunch at Lions park in West Dubbo.
"[The walk] is really to signify that we as a community are here to support you," Ms Hartley said. "It's about connecting as a community... reaching out and saving lives."
