Australia Day, written and directed by Jonathan Biggins, is a "modern-day ripper of a comedy" which depicts the various personalities you'd come to know and love in a small country town, according to Dennis Coard, who plays the character Wally Stewart.
Coard, who's career in the entertainment industry screams variety, from his time as Summer Bay's Michael Ross on Home and Away, to Father O'Leary on Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, said "it had been a joy" to be cast in the touring play.
Coard said Australia Day was set in a Coriole, a small country town on the east coast of Australia.
"Everyone from the mayor to the CWA ladies are getting ready to celebrate Australia Day," he said.
"What they don't expect is to see two new residents crash the celebrations - the local Greens candidate and an Australian-born Vietnamese fellow."
Portraying Wally Stewart, the local builder, Coard said his character was "a cross between Alf Garnett and Alan Jones".
"He's very set on his ways," he said.
The entire play will make the audience "squirm a little bit but laugh a lot," Coard said.
