Shopfitter and renovator Bill Issa allegedly targeted homes with  petrol bombs to derail legal complaints made against him and his business.

Several disgruntled customers allegedly found strips of the bedsheets used as cloth wicks to light the  petrol bombs that damaged their homes.

A Sydney District Court jury heard on Monday that Mr Issa launched six arson attacks designed to pervert the course of justice.

Mr Issa, who was 50 at the time of the alleged offences, pleaded not guilty to all charges on Monday.

The fire bombings took place between March and May 2013, and aimed at properties in Milsons Point, St Clair, Girraween, Maroubra and Mosman.

Three of these homes belonged to customers who had brought proceedings against Mr Issa in court and the Consumer Trader and Tenancy Tribunal.

The home and former office of a lawyer acting for one family were also struck.

"Each of the victims is in some way connected to civil proceedings conducted against the accused and his company," Crown prosecutor Neil Adams said.

No one was seriously injured.

The court was told Mr Issa, acting alone or with others, used petrol in Corona bottles and V energy drink cans to commit the arson.

Police searched Mr Issa's home at Kemps Creek and his Smithfield business, where they found Bob the Builder bedsheets and empty Corona bottles stacked beside a funnel.

Mr Issa is also accused of beating up a disgruntled customer at an Ultimo restaurant with two other men.

Mr Issa and the pair allegedly assaulted the man with knuckle-dusters and a long black torch in a lift.

For this attack, Mr Issa was charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm. He has pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of reckless wounding in the company of others.

Defence barrister Michael Pickin said his client had been in a "short-lived but physical attack" without intending "really serious harm".

Mr Issa remains on bail.
