GET loud.
That’s the instruction form Orange Ex-Services co-coach Mitch Kennewell ahead of Saturday’s women’s Premier League Hockey final against City in Bathurst.
After securing a week one penalty shoot-out victory over Dubbo and then stunning Bathurst Souths in last weekend’s minor semi-final, the Servies girls are full of confidence and Kennewell believes that belief stems from on-field talk - and plenty of it.
“We need to keep that talk up,” he said.
“It can be pretty intimidating for the opposition when all they can hear is us talking and supporting each other. I think it just frustrates them, and it did last week. Our girls, we’ve got each others’ backs on the field, and the talk helps that.
“We’ve got to get loud.”
Servies put together arguably the best performance of their 2015 campaign in last weekend’s 5-1 demolition of Souths, the four-goal triumph earning the blue and golds passage to within just one win of this winter’s grand final - which this year will be held in Lithgow after Panthers won last week’s major semi-final.
Kennewell said with a near-full roster fit and raring to go, he was confident Ex-Services were capable of securing that final decider berth.
“If we can play like we did last week again, it’s going to take a pretty good team to beat us,” Kennewell said.
“I missed (Thursday) night’s training, but Marjo (Darryn Marjoram) said the girls were very positive and trained well again. We’ll be missing Mel Woods and Kate (Butcherine) who’s gone for the year, but we’re pretty confident.”
He said the key to success was shutting down City’s goal-scoring threats, which come no bigger than short corner juggernaut Andrea Seymour.
“They can put goals away, City,” Kennewell said.
“I’ve seen them play a couple of times, and the quality isn’t there but they manage to score goals when they get in the circle.
“But like last week, if we can put a few defenders on their shooters and shut down their time I think we’ll be okay.”
Saturday’s women’s PLH final will kick-off at 1.50pm in Bathurst.
