Gunnedah-based Garland usually only races around his home region but with no races on he made the trek to Dubbo.
It turned out to be a successful one with Deb's Dream finishing third early in the program before Bindigo Lad claimed the fifth win of his career.
"It's a bit of a surprise," Garland admitted.
"It's his first time here. He never trialled here and handled the track better than expected."
Bindigo Lad ($2.10 favourite) began well from box one and despite some early pressure from Jacobite Leevi ($13.60) and Angel Roc ($44.40) he took control of the race down the back straight.
From there it was a routine performance as he went on to win by two lengths from Jacobite Leevi while the Shannon Kirby-trained Low Earner ($11.90) came home well for third.
"He's not a bad beginner, I thought he might lose it at first corner or after the back straight but he handled it really well and I'm really pleased with him," Garland said.
"He's always in the money and that's what you've got to have. I brought two across today and had a win and a third so I can't complain."
The connections of the winner in the next race were also extremely pleased as Zipping Chloe broke through for her first career win.
It was her first start for trainer Lesley Coyte after being purchased from trainer Karen and Martin Hallinan.
Anthony Coyte said after the Glen Gallon @ Stud Maiden (318m) it was pleasing to get a result so soon.
"We've had her for about eight weeks, we bought two as brood bitches and this is the first one to start for us and she's won so it's good," he said.
"She's very well bred so we took a risk and bought them and paid off."
While Zipping Chloe ($1.90) began as favourite, it was the Charmaine Roberts-trained Glady Keeping ($2.30) who began the best.
As they hit the turn for home Zipping Chloe had already got to the lead and powered home for a one-and-three-quarter length win.
"She came out a little ordinary but punched through well and got the win." Coyte said.
Glady Keeping came in second while Oldmate Lara ($12.70) was a further five-and-a-half lengths back in third.
