The team from the Blue Mountains won grade six last year and made the trip to Dubbo this year looking to collect another flag.
They did just that in Monday’s final, downing Wagga Rules Bowling Club 66-49 after 61 ends.
“It feels really good, especially after the winning the pennant last year too in the sixes,” Lawson team manager Andrew Frater said.
“It was a great effort.”
The tournament was hosted by both Club Dubbo and Railway and everyone in attendance was full of praise for both facilities and all the volunteers at both clubs who dedicated their time and effort to ensure all games ran smoothly.
Lawson, cheered on by a vocal and brightly-coloured group of travelling supporters, dropped their first match of the weekend but soon hit their straps and continued to improve as the competition went on.
“They were pretty confident,” Frater said.
“They had gone through undefeated but lost their first match this year in the round-robin over at Club Dubbo but came back and won second game well.
“Then won the third, had a tight semi-final and won in the last stint but I think that spurred them on and they came here and played well.”
Frater was full of praise for all of his team, stating some of the veteran players led from the front when the pressure was on but stated no one let the team down.
“They brought their A-game again and they did that last year at the right time too,” he said.
“It’s been a really good effort and all we can hope is that we can keep it going.
“Lawson hasn’t had this sort of success in its 90 year history so it’s been a great effort.
“At the moment I can’t play so it’s been really good to manage them, really easy, and they’ve done everything they’ve had to do.”
While the Lawson players and their supporters cheered during the presentations and headed inside the club to kick off the celebrations, Frater also took some time to continue the praise for Dubbo.
“It’s been really good, the greens were great,” he said.
“We were at Club Dubbo and they looked after us and then when we arrived here the guys greeted us with open arms and Dubbo is just a really nice town.”
