MasterChef is well and truly back from the brink.
The ratings for last night's marathon two-and-a-half-hour finale give the Channel Ten show its strongest ratings in four years, with 2.7 million people tuning in to watch Billie McKay, 24, take the MasterChef title.
The number of people watching peaked at 2.86 million when McKay was named the winner with her recreation of a ridiculous Heston Blumenthal dessert.
The figure is sure to be a relief for Ten, who have had to rescue the beloved cooking show from a downward ratings spiral in recent years.
MasterChef broke ratings records in 2010 when 3.9 million tuned in to watch lawyer Adam Liaw beat youngster Callum Hann in season two's finale.
By 2013, that number had plummeted to 1.06 million.
Producers of the show decided to return to their roots and cut the celebrity, kids and all-star spin-offs, and Australian audiences rewarded them for it.
The number of people watching last year's MasterChef finale doubled to 2.07 million.
Last night's ratings show there's still a strong appetite for MasterChef and cooking programs like it.
Masterchef rated better than renovation shows Seven's House Rules and Nine's Reno Rumble nearly every night in the capital cities this year.
Seven's My Kitchen Rules is also a ratings juggernaut, often winning the ratings each night with an average nightly audience of around 1.4 million.
The grand final in May also pulled an audience of two million.
With the exit of MasterChef for another year, Seven and Nine will be hoping to capitalise on our love of cooking shows when they launch two new programs on Tuesday night.
Seven's Restaurant Revolution and Nine's The Hotplate will go head-to-head in the 7.30 timeslot but are vastly different programs.
The Hotplate is Nine's very similar take on My Kitchen Rules, but will see restaurant owners, not amateurs, battle it out each week.
Restaurant Revolution is part The Block, part Shark Tank, and will see contestants manage the operation of a pop-up restaurant in each capital city. They will be judged on their food as well as profit margins each week.
While food programs look like a ratings success with Australian audiences, only time will tell how long such a large number of cooking shows can be comfortably accommodated on our screens.
