The undulations, particularly at the start, make this short course a challenge for many riders.
With a handicap format several groups of three riders headed out, with Susan Madden having the luxury of riding with Sam Peacock and Peter Sheridan.
This saw their group still leading everyone home on the last up-hill climb before the finish line.
The bunch of Chris Brook, Jeff Sargent and Evan Elliott were working well together and caught Chris Turtle, Luke Beange and Mark Weir after the turn around, with this bunch then working on towards the finish line.
However the scratch and chopping block groups had joined up before the turn around, and were in hot pursuit of those riders in front of them, catching the next group with a few kilometres to go.
Craig May wasn't waiting around for anyone and continually attacked off the front, then with 2km to go he gapped the group with him and went on his own in pursuit of the three riders still ahead.
On the last rise before the home sprint, Craig overtook first Jody Phillips, then Sam Peacock and finally Susan Madden, and dashed for the line.
Despite the best efforts of Max Newton, Jeff Sargent and Ray Wheeler they were unable to bridge the gap to Craig, having to be content with the minor placings on the day.
Placings with adjusted times are as follow: Craig May, Max Newton 45.20, Jeff Sargent 49.33, Ray Wheeler 46.30, Mark Weir 50.38, Chris Brook, Evan Elliott 49.34, Chris Turtle 50.41, Susan Madden 53.18, Mick Cooper 46.39, Sam Peacock 53.24, Luke Beange 50.51, Jody Phillips 65.27, Peter Sheridan 58.53, Maurie Ashford 54.36.
Half way through the winter season point score, Chris Turtle has taken over the lead at the head of the ladder.
He is only two points ahead of Chris Brook and Jeff Sargent who are on equal second, with Susan Madden and Evan Elliott next in the placings.
The race with Orana Veterans next Saturday will be on the Wongarbon course, starting at the usual time of 2.30pm.
