With Dubbo Greyhound Racing Club returning to racing after a five-week hiatus, there was plenty of talk about the new off-track facilities but on the track it was not surprising to see the strong kennels of Paul and Pam Braddon come to the fore early.
In the first heat of the series it was the Braddon-owned-and-trained Bundarra Magic ($1.70 fav) that was able to muster enough speed from box one to punch through and hold the lead before eventually defeating Mimosa Girl ($27.70) by two-and-three-quarter lengths in a time of 23.19s.
Childlike Queen ($12.80) was a neck further back in third position.
Less than 20 minutes later the Rhonda Millsteed-trained Katey added to her impressive career record when she also led throughout from the inside draw to win her heat.
After winning previously at Coonamble and Coonabarabran, the Fabregas x Macey bitch was able to dominate the second heat as she strolled away for her third win from eight starts in a time of 23.29s. Although her time was the slowest of the three heats, Katey ($2.20 fav) had the biggest winning margin of the qualifying events, winning by four-and-a-quarter lengths from Betown Melody ($6.90), with Zachary Cargo ($6.80) in third place.
In the final heat Dubbo trainer Peter Carr tasted success when Cicatriz ($3.40) scored brilliantly in 23.04s.
Although he was not as well away as the previous heat winners, the Bekim Bale x Josey Casey dog mustered good speed to find the front in the middle stages before going on to beat Kalimba Jaz ($8.40) by three-quarters-of-a-length.
The final of the series will be held on Monday night, when the Dubbo club stages the first of its Monday night meetings for the 2015-16 racing season.
With Wentworth Park shifting its dates from Monday night to Wednesday, a timeslot opened up for other clubs and Dubbo was rewarded for its strong progress in recent times by securing a handful of the night meetings.
Bathurst also races on Mondays, meaning greyhound fans will get a handful of opportunities through the season to watch the Bathurst meeting flow into the Dubbo card, and ensuring the Central West is the focal point of the sport on those particular dates.
