The Wombats ran rings around the students, putting the game out of reach within the first 30 minutes. It was their performance in defence, however, that most impressed coach Neil McDonald.
"In defence we scrambled really well, I was impressed by that," he said.
"The biggest thing is that it's easy to score points but it's also easy to let them in and we didn't do that today."
It was the Wombats' bright start that allowed them to rest their stars in the second half, namely Daniel Nuimata and Rota Setu.
Dave Smith got the home side off to the perfect start with a trademark bullocking run to score just beside the post.
Try-machine Daniel Nuimata then got his first for the afternoon, crashing over in the corner to make the score 12-0 after just 10 minutes.
The big winger went over again 10 minutes later, with replacement fly-half Bill O'Reilly converting from the sideline for a 19-0 lead.
Despite losing starting fly-half Josh Cooksen mid-week, the Wombats lost nothing in replacement number 10 O'Reilly, who directed his side around the park with a strong kicking and passing game that allowed the stars on his outside to do what they do best; play entertaining running rugby.
Nuimata then completed a remarkable first half hat-trick, palming off three would-be tacklers, making a mockery of CSU's defence.
There was more misery for the students before the break, this time with the deadly combination of Nuimata and Setu combining for two more tries, a flick pass from Nuimata on both occasions giving Setu two first half tries to make it 36-nil at half-time.
It was more of the same from the Wombats' leading try scorer in the second half, with Nuimata getting on the end of a chip kick by Cameron Rosamond from the base of a ruck to race away for his fourth, before being substituted.
The win keeps Mudgee in fifth, ahead of the Dubbo Kangaroos and the Wombats will be confident of maintaining that place when they travel to Narromine next week.
