The younger male threatened to stab the resident during a scuffle and then fled the property in the city’s east on Sunday afternoon.
A police search located a suspect in a house nearby but the person avoided capture and remains at large as investigations are continuing.
About 4.50pm on Sunday police attended an address on the Golden Highway in Dubbo’s east in response to reports of a home invasion.
The elderly resident confronted a male aged about 16 to 22 years and of Aboriginal appearance who had entered his home and removed a set of car keys, Inspector Dan Skelly said.
The intruder then went to the carport area and tried to enter the resident’s car.
At this point the resident entered into a scuffle with the younger male in an attempt to stop the theft of his car, Inspector Skelly said.
During the scuffle the intruder threatened to stab the resident, who then let him loose, he said.
The younger male ran off into surrounding streets.
Police canvassed the area for some time and located a suspect in a house nearby, who ran from police and was able to avoid capture.
Investigations were continuing and forensic police would examine the scene, the inspector said.
Police have called for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Colombia Drive or Wheelers Lane or the surrounding area about 4pm on Sunday to contact Dubbo detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
