A crowd gathered at Dubbo City Council for a flag raising ceremony with residents and members of the Orana Region Filipino Australian Association Inc.
Dubbo mayor Mathew Dickerson was present for the momentous occasion.
Cr Dickerson said he was honoured to be involved in the celebrations for the country’s independence.
Dubbo’s reputation as a multicultural hub was outstanding, he said.
“We respect what the Filipino community brings to the city,” Cr Dickerson said.
“It’s important for Dubbo to accept what we have established already, but we always look to welcome people with open arms.”
Philippine Consul-General Anne Jalando-on Louis said she was proud to be included in the celebrations.
While the official date for Philippine Independence Day fell on June 12, Ms Louis said NSW stretched the celebrations for an entire month.
“It is with pride we raise our flag as we take time to remember the brave men and women who fought in the Filipino revolution,” she said.
Ms Louis reminded the crowd of the importance of the flag’s colours, placing a large emphasis on the blue which represented peace and unity, she said.
Organiser Leah McKinney said she was grateful for the effort of Dubbo City Council and the community for recognising the day.
“Dubbo is such a warm and welcoming city and I know the entire Filipino community here is grateful for that,” Mrs McKinney said.
