Council amalgamations: the good, the bad and the ugly

With just a few days to go before the deadline for submissions to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, councils have, by and large, delivered a resounding "no thanks" to the Baird government on its plans for amalgamating Sydney's 41 councils into about 12. There are just two proposed voluntary mergers: Randwick and Waverley and Burwood, Canada Bay and Auburn Parramatta has also put in a council improvement plan that involves swallowing its neighbour Holroyd and taking large chunks of Ryde, Hornsby and The Hills.
