Emergency services converged on Elizabeth Street about 3.40pm following reports smoke was coming from one of a block of units.
NSW Fire and Rescue Dubbo station officer Mick Medlin said firefighters gained entry to the two-bedroom unit and found the kitchen alight.
The area was blocked off and the fire extinguished shortly afterwards.
Station officer Medlin said firefighters managed to contain the fire to the kitchen but it caused extensive smoke damage.
"Unfortunately, a pet bird was found deceased," he said.
Station officer Medlin said there were no other reports of injuries and the fire was not being considered suspicious.
