With 75 per cent of same-sex attracted or gender diverse young people in Australia experiencing some form of homophobic or transphobic abuse, events like the prom are increasingly important and help increase awareness of the discrimination they endure.
Clinical Leader at Headspace Dubbo, Anne-Maree Hartley, believes events like the prom help make Dubbo a more inclusive community.
"This event forms part of ACON's Anti-Violence Campaign and celebrates diversity, whilst also challenging homophobic and transphobic prejudice, to make Dubbo a place where everyone belongs," Ms Hartley said.
"Homophobia, transphobia and biphobia still exists today, and we invite all of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans and/or Intersex (LGBTI) community and straight allies to come along to this fantastic event."
Everyone is welcome to attend the prom and is encouraged to dress as a famous lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex character or celebrity.
Headspace has partnered with Rainbow Alliance to host the night of gender equality and sexual diversity, which will be held at the Quality Inn, 165 Whylandra Street, Dubbo.
