Police were called again to Walgett's only high school on Tuesday when a 15-year-old girl allegedly threatened another student with a brick before being restrained by the deputy principal who pinned her to the ground.

It was not the first time that bricks had been used as weapons at the school, said a former teacher.

Sources say the incident is typical of the ongoing violence and lawlessness by some students at the school in north western NSW which has poor academic results. The situation has got so bad that the Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli is considering a call by the NSW Teachers Federation for a review of government policy at the school and in the community.

Former staff of the school have told Fairfax Media that teachers and support staff are also verbally abused on a daily, if not, hourly basis.

Instead of wishing their teacher a good morning, a routine greeting by students to staff was "f--- off."

Several former staff said they had often been told they were "f---ing c---s" and to "go dig up their dead grandmother and f--- her."  One said the verbal abuse was so bad it had contributed to his serious health problems.

The ongoing violence, poor academic results and high turnover of school staff has prompted complaints to the deputy ombudsman Danny Lester. Other documents obtained by Fairfax Media last month revealed deep concerns by a member of the school's Connected Communities reference group - an Indigenous advisory group - who told a meeting that the school had become a hotbed for "violence and criminal activity."  Those comments were contained in the minutes of meeting leaked to Fairfax Media.

During the incident at the remote school on Tuesday, it is understood that the school's new deputy principal Aaron Stevens restrained the girl physically.

A spokesman for the NSW police confirmed police were investigating reports of "intimidation and malicious damage involving a student" on the site of the high school at Arthur Street, Walgett.

No one was injured during the incident and inquiries were continuing, police said.

The high school is part of the Walgett Community college which includes both primary and secondary campuses. It is the only high school in the small rural town, which is now facing the worst drought in NSW.

The leaked documents detailed "chronic" absenteeism by teachers and students, repeated suspensions of students and a high turnover of teachers.

The Teachers Federation would not comment on the latest incident while it is the subject of department and police investigations.

But last month its deputy president, Gary Zadkovich, said "it was unfair and unreasonable to expect teachers to shoulder the responsibility for rectifying and resolving conflict, tensions, complexities, problems and divisions in a local community like Walgett that go back decades".

"We believe our members are doing the best they can to provide quality education for the students in Walgett college," he said. "Unfortunately, their efforts are being undermined by the failure of various government agencies to properly address issues in the broader community."

A spokesman for the NSW Department of Education said the victim of the attack had been provided with counselling while the assailant had been disciplined. The deputy principal will also be offered counselling if necessary.
