Malcolm Stanley Thornton, 29, was seen by police travelling at high speed through streets in Dubbo’s south, including near a supermarket where pedestrian traffic and vehicle traffic was “dense”.
In Dubbo Local Court this month he pleaded guilty to the charges of drive furiously, recklessly at a speed and manner dangerous to the public and driving with a blood alcohol reading of 0.042 and will be sentenced in June.
About 4.10pm on March 1, police observed a Ford Falcon travelling at high speed east along Tamworth Street and then turn into Jubilee Street and proceed at a high speed, “endangering the general public and the vehicle passengers”, court documents show.
The officers followed the vehicle, activating all warning devices, and saw it turn into Hutchins Avenue, Palmer Street and then Tamworth Street once more.
It travelled in a westerly direction where pedestrian traffic and vehicle traffic was dense due to the supermarket in Tamworth Street, the documents show.
The Ford “continued to travel in a manner dangerous to the public and at a high speed dangerous to the public”, turning right into Jubilee Street and then eventually came to a stop, the documents show.
The driver exited the vehicle and submitted to being handcuffed and then made admissions to police about driving with alcohol present in his system.
“The accused said words similar to ‘I was chasing a paedophile from Sandy Beach, I’m over the limit I been drinking rum and bourbon’,” the documents show.
Police observed the motor vehicle to be emitting smoke from the engine and brakes, indicating the vehicle had been driven under duress, the documents show.
Magistrate Claire Girotto ordered a pre-sentence report and Thornton will be back before the court to learn his fate in June.
The maximum penalty for driving recklessly or furiously at a speed or manner dangerous to the public is nine months in jail or a $2200 fine or both.
