PRP Radiographer Kylie Lummis said the Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) machine was a great thing for Dubbo to have.
“Normal mammography machines take one picture so all of the tissue is superimposed, but this machine takes an arc of pictures,” she said.
“It’s a lot like a CT, it shows slices through the breast.”
Ms Lummis said the DBT helped detect lesions which could go unnoticed by a regular mammogram.
“It reduces the incidences of being recalled unnecessarily and it helps the sonographer find lesions,” she said.
Another benefit of the machine was that it was more comfortable for people undergoing a mammogram.
“The technology is quite new so as soon as we could get one we did,” she said.
“There’s not another one for at least an hour-and-a-half radius.
Ms Lummis said the machine was very popular and some days were completely booked out.
“We love anything that reduces the risk of breast cancer,” she said.
