Teachers from all NSW Catholic schools, including St John's College and St John's St Lawrence's, St Mary's and St Pius were due to hold a full-day stop work meeting but a "significant breakthrough in negotiations" led to strike action being cancelled.
The Independent Educational Union said negotiations on an enterprise agreement had been going on for more than 12 months but there had been commitment between it and the Catholic Commission for Employment Relations. However, it cautioned more discussion on the finer points would be required.
"Members in the flood-ravaged regions of the Hunter, Central Coast, Illawarra and parts of Sydney have managed to meet and support their union's negotiations, while also assisting their school and local communities," IEU general secretary, John Quessy, said.
"The union appreciates members' continued commitment to this campaign. Our teachers and support staff remain strong, united and committed to their union and their profession.
"Catholic school students are also the beneficiaries of a positive outcome from these negotiations which have achieved real gains for our members."
