DUBBO City Council's Youth Development Officer Jason Yelverton has described as "amazing" the city's Anzac Sleep-Out that attracted hundreds of participants to Victoria Park No. 1 Oval at the weekend.
The event was an initiative of the Dubbo City Youth Council, who aimed to stage a special event that would encourage young people to take an active part in the commemorative services of the Anzac Centenary.
Tickets were still being sold at the gate as the event was getting under way, and at last count there had been some 1600 sold, Mr Yelverton said.
A fly-past by a Royal Australian Air Force C-130J Hercules was a highlight of the event, which began on Friday afternoon and culminated in the Anzac Day Dawn Service on Saturday.
"The plane had everyone buzzing, it flew so low and looked like it went between the light poles of the oval," Mr Yelverton said.
"The parade was also very special, there was only one tiny thing in that the lights didn't come on as the parade was coming around so they turned the stage lights onto the area where it had assembled in formation, with the horses, and it looked great."
Mr Yelverton said it was pleasing that participants had travelled from out of town to join Dubbo residents in the sleep-out.
He said the event would not have been possible without the assistance of many volunteers who, like himself, would no doubt be looking forward to catching up on some sleep.
"And a big thank-you to the Dubbo RSL sub-branch for their support, in particular Shaun Graham, along with the team from Uniting Care Burnside for their commitment in staying up all night, putting on films and allowing us to use their big cinema screen," Mr Yelverton said.
