Gas Fields Free Dubbo Region teamed up with other anti-coal seam gas groups including Lock the Gate and the North West Alliance to make a protest rally they say stretched for more than 2400 kilometres, between 10am and 2pm.
The Dubbo-organised stretch of the rally went from Dubbo to Eumungerie on the Newell Highway with a roadside stall every five kilometres, featuring protesters with hand-painted signs.
The hope was the demonstration would raise the awareness of motorists, and Greens party member Matt Parmeter said there had been a strong response.
"We have people with a wide variety of backgrounds but they all have one common agenda and that is to bring an end to CSG because of the danger it poses to our land and our water," Mr Parmeter said.
"Personally I want to see a much greater focus on renewable energy because it is so much cleaner and environmentally friendly.
"We have received a lot of support, so many people are honking their horn and waving so we hope this campaign can have a positive effect."
The protests began at Dubbo and stretched right up the Newell Highway, past the Queensland border, while other target areas included the Pacific Highway from Newcastle to Lismore and roads around Armidale, Forster and Grafton, where there has been CSG activity.
Some of the signs targeted Santos, the gas company responsible for the controversial CSG exploration in the Pilliga Forest but others were more general, brandishing slogans including "What's worse than CSG? Apathy - Act now".
