Statistics released by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show Dubbo retaining its unenviable crime rate of twice the NSW average.
Major crimes like murders and robberies are infrequent.
But, Dubbo has high rates of assaults, stealing and crimes against property.
Domestic assault offences dropped marginally in 2014.
Police ran targeted campaigns against domestic violence last year and were strongly supported by community organisations and public awareness campaigns.
Other assaults also decreased. But, even one violent attack is too many.
Break and enters into businesses or other non-residential premises trebled in 2014.
Targets have ranged from break-ins at men’s sheds to motorbike dealers.
The trend will be of major concern to the business community.
Steal from motor vehicle offences increased by about 20 per cent in 2014.
Police and the Dubbo City Council ran a long, high-profile public awareness campaign urging residents to lock cars and remove or hide valuables when parking in public areas or at home.
Perhaps residents weren’t listening but that is one crime the community can help fight by simply locking up.
It is an opportunistic crime. Simply remove the opportunities.
Shoplifting offences dropped 22 per cent after police made reducing the crime a priority in 2013.
Police cannot fight crime on their own. Lock your house and car. Secure valuables. Businesses should secure premises adequately. Make it harder for criminals.
