The investigation uncovered the drugs in a search on Thursday, local police were called in on Friday morning sometime after 10am.
Police confirmed they had sent a package for testing and analysis and were continuing to investigate the matter.
In a correctional facility, if more than five grams of illegal drugs are found the inmate faces an indictable offence charge, which has a maximum imprisonment term of two years in NSW.
A spokesperson from the NSW Corrective Services told the Daily Liberal on Friday: “On the afternoon of 9 April 2015, the Corrective Services NSW Security Operations Group and local staff conducted a search of some inmates at Wellington Correctional Centre.
This was based on intelligence obtained by staff at the centre. Suspected contraband was found and police have attended the centre today (10 April) to conduct an investigation”.
Police said no charges would be laid until results of the tests were returned and proven to be drugs.
During searches at the centre recently, it is understood in almost 30 cases more than half of them returned a positive for crystal methamphetamines (ice).
