Orana Local Area Command Inspector Gemini Bakos said police received a series of calls from residents reporting they had seen and heard motorcycles burning around in a variety of Dubbo locations in the early hours of Sunday morning.
"The first was about 5.04am Sunday - a community member in East Street heard what appeared to be a quad bike or similar doing burnouts," she said.
"Police attended but by the time they arrived the bikes had left.
"There was another call at 5.22am from a community member who reported it happening in River Street, then another call about 5.39am with similar reports of bikes hooning around Twickenham Drive.
"At 5.52am we got a call from someone who reported four bikes riding around the Boundary Road area, and at 6.48am to say that a quad bike had been left in a park there."
Meanwhile police got a call to say that ARB 4x4 Accessories in River Street had been broken into, Inspector Bakos said.
She said it appeared intruders had gained access via a side door.
Detectives set up a crime scene and the site was forensically examined.
"At this stage we can confirm five quad bikes were stolen," Inspector Bakos said.
"We have recovered three of them and two are still missing.
"Inquiries are continuing - if anyone believes they have found one of these bikes or has any information about the incident, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
