The introduction of the additional needs trolleys is the culmination of two years of research to design and manufacture a trolley which can assist parents with children who have a disability.
The Dubbo Coles supermarket is now one of 372 stores around Australia, which has an additional needs trolley manufactured by Queensland company, QHDC Australia Pty Ltd.
Coles operations and supply chain director Andy Coleman said he hoped the trolley would help make shopping easier for parents or carers who had a child with a disability.
The new trolley means parents or carers who have children with a disability are not disadvantaged by not being able to use a regular trolley.
It allows them to place all their groceries in a trolley while also having their child seated safely, Dubbo Coles assistant manager Anthony Finch, said the trolley would make a real difference to Dubbo residents’ shopping experience.
Mr Finch said the store was extremely supportive of disability services, often fundraising for Orana Early Learning Intervention.
The trolley, which was originally based on a trolley known as Caroline’s Cart, allows for a child of up to 70 kilograms in weight and has padding on the sides, a harness and additional support in its structure.
Coles will be able to provide the additional needs trolley to any stores that request one on behalf of their customers.
