For the first time Wellington will vote in the seat of Dubbo, after formerly being in the Orange electorate currently held by Andrew Gee.
Mr Grant said he was not surprised his son pursued a career in politics although he said sometimes he was a little less cynical than you might expect for a politician.
"He has always shown great leadership," he said
"His integrity is beyond reproach and he sometimes finds it hard to see wrong in people."
Troy Grant became leader of the National Party after Andrew Stoner stood down.
"It was a rapid rise for Troy but I have always held the belief he was a leader in the making," Mr Grant said.
Like his son Mr Grant was a policeman for many years.
The proud father discussed matters with ALP candidate Stephen Lawrence at the Wellington Civic Centre, and the pair appeared to be enjoying their chat as voters walked in to the first pre-polling day.
Troy Grant said his family was a great support.
"Its good to have them out here helping out and being part of the whole event."
