About 2.15am on Saturday police were attending a grass fire on the Castlereagh Highway, north of the township of Walgett, when a silver Mitsubishi Galant sedan allegedly sped past them.
Officers initiated a pursuit but the Mitsubishi drove on at what police will allege was high speed, swerving from side to side across the roadway and, at one stage, spinning around 360 degrees.
Police will allege the driver of the Mitsubishi attempted to escape them by travelling down a dirt road but the car became stuck.
Officers arrested the three occupants of the vehicle and brought them all to Walgett Police Station, where the driver – a 25-year-old man – was breath-tested.
He returned a reading of 0.153 and was subsequently charged with high-range drink driving.
He was further charged with failing to stop during a police pursuit (Skye’s Law), driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving an uninsured vehicle.
Granted conditional bail, he is scheduled to appear before Walgett Local Court on April 14.
The two passengers travelling in the car were released without charge.
