Retired palliative care specialist, Dr Yvonne McMaster is a passionate advocate for improved end-of-life care.
She has been the backbone behind the Push for Palliative campaign, driving the government for increased funding for services across the state.
Along with the help for Dubbo palliative care ambassador, Barbara O'Brien, and other regional ambassadors, the Push for Palliative petition has more than 76,000 signatures from those supporting the notion.
Dr McMaster said there was a need for a specialist palliative physician and more specialist nurses.
She said all patients deserved to die with dignity and to be truly alive for the last possible time.
Dr McMaster and Mrs O'Brien said they were blown away by the support from the Dubbo community, with more than 120 residents attending the meeting on Tuesday evening.
"There were just so many people willing to be involved, which is why we've now formed a specific Dubbo group to push the issue," Dr McMaster said.
With more than 40 expected to join the group, Dr McMaster saw it fit to appoint another Dubbo ambassador, Nadia Anderson.
"With Barbara and Nadia working together, we will be able to cover both ends of the age spectrum to spread the word," she said.
Dr McMaster said Push for Palliative aimed to have a specialist palliative care physician placed permanently in Dubbo and many more specialised palliative care nurses.
She also hoped to have a social worker and occupational therapist placed in the city as well.
"Palliative care is about tailoring the treatment to the individual's needs," she said.
"There has to be attention to detail to every patient."
Dr McMaster said the Push for Palliative Dubbo Advocacy Group would continue to drive local members for the need for suitable bed space in both Lourdes Hospital and the new Dubbo Hospital.
