Skinner batted for close to the full 20 overs and made 71 in his side's total of 8-145 before taking 3-21 with the ball to help dismiss the Cricketer's Arms Journeymen for 115.

It was a worthy victory for Newtown, who finished the Twenty20 season as minor premiers and captain Mat Skinner was overjoyed by his team's performance.

"It's an awesome feeling, it's really good to get some silverware," he said.

"Colts (Journeymen) are a really good team so it was good to knock them off and hopefully we can take some of that confidence into the Whitney Cup."

Newtown won the toss and batted in the decider and despite losing Tetaan Henning (8) early, Skinner brothers Mat and Steve added 42 for the second wicket before Mat departed for 17.

When Dan Holland then departed just three balls later without adding to the score Colts were right back in the match.

But Dan French (18) managed to stick with Skinner in a 72-run partnership which the former Tigers skipper dominated.

Skinner only hit two fours in his 71 runs but he cleared the fence on six occasions in a knock which set up the victory.

"Steve batted awesome," Mat said of his brother.

"He did it hard early, they bowled really well but our plan was to not concede early wickets because they live off that so it was a bit slow to start but I knew we could pile on runs in the last ten if we had wickets in hand."

That plan worked to perfection as Newtown were 1-51 after ten overs before piling on 94 runs in the final ten overs.

Despite making a formidable total, victory was far from certain against the Journeymen's powerful batting lineup.

But after five overs the Journeymen were 3-14 with the particularly dangerous Greg Buckley out for five, a wicket which brought about a huge celebration from the Tigers.

"Myself and Dan (Horrocks) started off again and we executed our plans and gave nothing away," Skinner said.

"The required run rate was about seven so we knew a couple of tight overs would put them under pressure and they went for some big shots and we took good catches."

Journeymen captain Chris Morton was a shining light for his side and threatened to steal the show at one stage.

He smashed 51 but Horrocks then swooped to dismiss him via a quality runout.

While Horrocks (2-15 off 4) and Mat Skinner (1-12 off 4) set the platform, Steve Skinner did the damage in the middle as he picked up the big wickets of Paul Hulthen, Wes Giddings and Josh Smith.

Youngster Marty Jeffrey took a late two wickets to seal the victory.

After celebrating winning the first piece of silverware available this season, Newtown's attention now returns to the Whitney up where they have already sealed a finals spot.
