Inspector David Cooper from Lachlan Local Area Command said the discovery was made at 10am on Friday about 20km north-east of Parkes, adjacent to the Renshaw McGirr Way.
Inspector Cooper said the body had been identified as Darren Heraghty who had been reported as missing.
Police Media issued a statewide alert on Thursday appealing for public help to find Mr Heraghty.
The alert said the 41-year-old had been last seen leaving a home in Noonan Street, Parkes at 7.30pm on Monday.
He had been driving a white Holden Colorado utility and had not taken his wallet or mobile phone.
"Officers from Lachlan Local Area Command conducted extensive searches in the Parkes and Forbes areas," Inspector Cooper said.
"Up to a dozen police officers in vehicles conducted ground searches throughout the night."
Inspector Cooper said a post mortem would be conducted to determine cause of death.
"Police do not believe the death is suspicious," he said.
"Police thank members of the public and the media for their assistance."
