DUBBO Turf Club chief executive Vince Gordon believes the Country Championships series is boosting the development of the whole industry as his club prepares for a busy month.
Bathurst hosted the first of the seven $100,000 heats on Sunday and after such a strong turnout to see Binalong Road and One Last Poet advance to the $300,000 final at Randwick next month, Gordon admitted the industry is buzzing.
"It's helping the whole development of the industry, the horses and also the spectators at the track," he said.
"It's giving people something to aspire to, the trainers and owners, because it's going to be the richest race in Dubbo and country horses can go from racing in Dubbo for $100,000 to racing at Randwick for $300,000 a couple of weeks later so that's a pretty good carrot."
Gordon and his committee will get a good chance to make sure the track is in tip-top condition this weekend with the hosting of the Milestone Hotel Sunday Session, a six-race meeting.
The meeting received a bumper 121 nominations yesterday and Gordon is expecting another successful day for the club.
"It's all flowing on from Pink Day Out where we had a good, solid meeting with good crowds and that's what we hope to provide," he said.
"If we have good days and people enjoy themselves then their more likely to go to the races again.
"The local interest is growing and there's plenty of local support for the club so these events are coming just at the right time."
Leading regional trainers Luke Griffith, Brett Thompson, Leon Davies, Gayna Williams and Max Crockett all have horses nominated for Sunday's meeting alongside a host of local trainers.
The Benchmark 55 Handicap is shaping as an intriguing event with a number of consistent performers on show.
The Mick Cox-trained Atomic Blaze will be looking to impress in his second start after a spell, with the gelding currently having earned more than $80,000.
Poker Star will be out for career win number 10 for Parkes trainer Sharon Jeffries while the Allan McCrae-trained Sarona Downs, with 18 placings from 27 starts, is shaping as a real chance.
Gordon said he's been busy in the lead-up to the next few weeks but is certain the track and club will be in top shape for the upcoming meetings while also urging locals to get out and support the sport.
"It's going in the right direction, it's a vibrant industry and we've got a great facility here so we've just got to make sure we support it and ensure we get the most out of it," he said.
Sunday's meeting begins at 12.30pm while Dubbo is hosting the Western Districts heat of the Country Championships series on March 22.
